Changing the Face of Gardening
“A History of Gardening in 50 Objects” by George Drower, is published by the History Press.
George Drower has written several books on the subject of gardening, and this latest one brings together 50 objects that have changed the face of gardening, and by extension, the world.
His first chapter is about the wheelbarrow, was invented by Chuko Liang in the 3rd century. The wheelbarrow was intended to help move weapons and equipment by soldiers, and the first versions had the wheel in the centre.
With Fresh Eyes
Drower has picked and chosen his subjects well, although the illustrations and the text rarely coincide. Overall, it’s an entertaining read and one that will give the opportunity to look with fresh eyes at the objects and their cultural significance.
