'Rockhampton Red' wins for Batouwe!
The novelty Carpinus betulus "Rockhampton Red", submitted by Batouwe Boomkwekerijen B.V., won the prize for Best Green Novelty at Expo TCO last week. "Rockhampton Red" is a selected cultivar of the standard hornbeam with striking orange/red autumn colour. The tree is a good grower with a nice, even crown structure, with the same characteristics as the seedling. Carpinus betulus "Rockhampton Red" is ideal as an avenue tree, as a solitary specimen or as hedging.
Second place went to Ulmus pendula "Mauro", a welcome addition to the range which is particularly suitable for the smaller garden. The tree was submitted by G&M Boomkwekerijen. Malus Rinki, submitted by Boomkwekerij Michels Classens came third. This apple forms an attractive tree with good resistance to scab and mildew, and the virtual absence of fruits is a plus point in many situations.
Power of the Trees
Best Green stand went to a stand jointly set up by Batouwe Boomkwekerijen B.V. (based in Dodewaard) and Boomkwekerij van Voorthuijsen v.o.f. The winning stand achieved the highest score on all seven criteria used by the judges. The theme of the fair was well presented by references to the power of trees. The stand was exceptionally inviting to visitors and the communication was outstanding, making clever use of the floor. The jury found that the materials used and the quality and range of plants were superb.
Second prize went to B&P Handelskwekerijen BV while R. Verwoert Boomkwekerij & Loonbedrijf came third. There was an honourable mention for the Huverba Boomkwekerijen stand, nicely laid out, restful and a pleasant place to spend time. The Boomteelt Studieclub stand was selected as best stand by the group of suppliers. The jury's verdict was that this was an inviting stand with good communication and that the collaborative element leapt out at them. Second prize was won by Agro “De Arend” BV while AOC Oost took third prize.
